Tyra Banks Talks About ANTM Cycle 13

June 25, 2009 by Erin Balser

Tyra Banks talked to CW’s the Source about the upcoming cycle of America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 13. It’s the first-ever cycle for short models (5′7″ and under) and will premiere on the CW on September 9th!

In the video below, Tyra talks about how short the girls are, how strong the competition is this time, and who the guest judges are. It’s amazing – Kim Kardashian, Lauren Conrad, Cheryl Tiegs and more!

What do you think of this very un-fashion approach to ANTM? Short girls, reality television stars – it sounds as thought Tyra has truly embraced what Top Model has become. That or she’s delusional. What do you think?

you know, lauren conrad does have a fashion line.

  2. Steady01 says:

Gross I can’t stand Lauren Conrad. But that aside I’m really shocked the shortest girl is 5′2. That’s tiny!! I don’t really think they’ll get much out of the fashion industry being that small, it’s sad but it’s the truth.

  3. Ms. Anon says:

By “it’s amazing”, do you mean it as sarcasm? While Cheryl Tiegs used to be a bonafide top model, Lauren Conrad only does showing in LA, and her clothes is nowhere near high fashion, but at least she is a designer. While Kim Kardashian best work is… her sex tape.

  4. Erin Balser says:

While I don’t get Kim Kardashian AT ALL, it’s just nice see to ANTM pulling in some big names. ANTM a fashion industry joke so actually getting serious designers and judges will be hard. I’m just glad to see they’re at least trying and getting people that people who watch ANTM will know.

  5. Carrie says:

I dunno, I don’t watch any of the NTMs for the celebrities or the hype or any of the bs. I watch so I can watch girls’ modelling careers unfold, it’s exciting.

But a 5′2″ girl is NOT gonna work. She’s not. As soon as I heard it was “short” girls, I was SO turned off. ANTM has become an EVEN BIGGER joke… Sad.

I think that it is good for them to be diverse, but how many “top” models have you ever seen that were only 5′2 gimme a break!! Lauren conrad is a joke I don’t care if she has a clothing line she sux, Kim K has a clothing store and does have a good fashion sense but they are not models, not real models anyway, what happened to the real models like Janice and Twiggy?? It’s getting kind of reality ridiculous!!!! Besides how do any of these women have the right to tell anyone that they aren’t pretty enough when everyone even them has body issues!!!!

I mean my feelings are really hurt, I am 5′10″ and was signing up for auditions for this season. I’ve watched since cycle 1 and finally decided to pursue my dreams and is 3″ too tall. How Crushing. Tyra please reconsider the requirements for me and all the dissappointed girls like myself.

  8. Indra says:

I agree with most of you… top models are supposed to be THE WHOLE PACKAGE… they are supposed to be great both with pictures and runway… and short models ARE NEVER HIRED for runway, at least not the famous designers… i´ve seen many NTMs, not only ANTMs cycles and even in ANTM, many girls who are really tall are not tall enough for some designers to want them on their fashion shows, so unless tyra has heard about a new revolution in modeling in which short models will now be “the thing”, i find it extremely dissapointing.. i know they want to include all types of girls (even transgenders), but i really consider this a desperate move to do something “new”… I´d really prefer for ANTM to continue as it is… as long as the photoshoots and the challenges are fun and/or interesting i find no reason to go to this extreme

  9. Indra says:

and by the way… IN EVERYYY CYCLE they say the same thing… this is the most difficult one, the girls have never been this strong, bla bla…. why not just say that THESE girls are extremely strong, not THE strongest… i mean,we do notice the same thing said every time even if on some cycles competition has been harder

  10. ANYM LOVA! says:

Im 12 and im taller than that!

  11. Joana says:

These girls might be great for print but not for runway. 5’2-5’5? that’s unheard of in the real world in High Fashion. They’re too short, but Tyra always has her tacky ideas. Anyway, none of the contestants of ANTM get far in the modeling world. They become too commercial and designers dislike commercial girls.

  12. bec says:

i have been looking at past winners and some of them really were just the prettiest or the best of the girls that were presented at that cycle. I mean its all relative right? I want Tyra to do a best of the best Top model’s. You know a cycle of the last 12 or soon to be 13 winners and see who wins that. There would be no more excuses of i just begain and im new etc blah blah crap that we hear again and again. Or maybe not the winners but all the runner up’s cause really i feel a lot of the runner up’s were better anyway. Mostly though what the show needs is to find a new host out with Tyra!

this cycle is by far the dumbest ever created. first of all, they dont even TRY to cover up the fact that this cycle means very little to both tyra and the producers- for example, they didnt even bother hiring the GOOD makeup artists that always work on antm, or the good hairstylists. this short thing is simply a gimmick- they are setting most of these girls up for failure and getting their hopes up. and why are they teaching them runway?! girls under 5′7 may be able to do (very little) print modeling (and trust me, the only print they will get will be commercial, not high fashion, with the exception of maybe nicole), but ive never ever seen a runway show featuring anyone under 5′8, and i do a lot of runway myself. the girls are a mixed bag- i personally feel that only three have potential facially: brittany (who has plenty of experience already, so it wouldnt make sense for her to win), erin and nicole (who IS 5′7, which is acceptable in some areas of fashion, although you must be 5′9 to do catalog, editorial for the most part, and runway). its people like jennifer and kara that i really worry about after they leave the show. the chance of jennifer getting ANY work at all is slim to none; she not only is 5′5 with a face that is not at all unique or “modelesque”, but she also has a severe lazy eye, and no client books you on pictures alone, so she will have to walk in and meet the client (this is if by some miracle she got signed), and once they see that eye, theyll make a snap decision-no. kara also has a really severe lazy eye, and i find it odd noone has pointed it out, since they pointed out jennifers. she is also very masculine looking, and reads as much much older than 20-something. i think laura is a plain jane, but i do like her personality; the sad truth is, her face shape is not right for photography, and her smile isnt great, so that pretty much limits her to..commercial ads where she wouldnt have to smile. bianca is another girl who’s smile is not attractive, and i keep mentioning smiles because in reality, a shorter girl, IF she can get booked at all, will be doing 99% commercial print- ads where girls are expected to be average-pretty and smiley. i know i sound super harsh and totally negative, but ive been modeling for a long time and know that this is exactly how the industry will think of the girls as well. tyra even admitted that she only created this cycle because all of her shorter fans were hounding her to let short women on the show. theyve clearly put much less effort, time and money into this cycle, which most people arent seeming to notice. i know a lot of shorter girls are saying “its great theyre giving girls like me a chance to model”, but in reality, all they are getting a chance to do is be on a reality show. i can safely say none of these girls are going to end up in vogue. its a little mean in my opinion in fact- tyra telling the girls “I believe you all have what it takes to be edgy, high fashion models”, while the INDUSTRY totally disagrees, and believe me, the industry does not care what tyra banks thinks; in fact girls on the show who ARE over 5′9 often have a hard time getting as much work as other models, unless they are heather from cycle 9, lauren brie from cycle 11, etc (i.e. extremely gorgeous faces with very long, thin bodies), because antm is sort of a joke in the real world of fashion. they look for three things right off the bat: proportions, face and height. they do consider beauty to be tall, skinny and “edgy”, which may be very closed-minded, but its the truth of the business. i myself think women with curves like laura from this cycle are gorgeous to look at, and very feminine, but if a girl like her tries to walk into an elite casting call (well, she wouldnt qualify for that anyway, since shes under 5′8, but lets say she was 5′9) they will cruely tell her to “come back after you lose 20 pounds). shes about a size 6, and they make you feel like a fat cow i youre a size 4. ive been told countless times to lose weight, even though in high school i was made fun of for being skinny. anyway, sorry for the long rant; i just had a few things on my mind about this cycle, and ihere would be the place to voice them!
