Top Model is ‘Addictive’

by Ingrid on March 2nd, 2006

DOSE.ca put ANTM in its spotlight section and called it ‘addictive’, and then in goes on to explain why:

America’s Next Top Model is addictive. But, its allure doesn’t lie in some poor-girl-gone-glamourous underdog story.

Rather, ANTM is like this big, inside joke that everyone is in on except the hopeful contestants. Sure, the finalists are attractive but with a median age of 23 these girls are pushing retirement age. Fresh-faced young models start out at age 13. By age 23 they should already have an impressive portfolio and enough burn out stories to write a tell-all.

Tyra knows this (ANTM is really just a vehicle to push her name brand). The judges know this (the show allows them great exposure). And Janice Dickinson knew this but she blew the whistle and promptly got fired.

Neverthelss, the audience tunes in every week, mesmerized by this simulacrum of a modelling competition where Tyra promises that if these girls be true to themselves they can overcome their race, weight and age and fit into probably the most intolerant industry in the world. Inexplicably, they believe her.

Well, perhaps it’s just for show, but one can’t deny that some of these girls have gone from being nobodys to being somebodys thanks to this show. I’m pretty sure for all of Adrienne Curry’s complaining, some part of her must be grateful for the career launch.

Maybe.
