Demelza Reveley Sent to Hospital

August 25, 2008 by Erin Balser

Only a week before she was set to take her winning trip to New York City to meet with agencies there, Australia’s Next Top Model 2008 winner Demelza Reveley fell severely ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.

“I had a heat rash and [my mum] thought that was meningococcal so she took me in on Saturday night,” Demelza told the Illawarra Mercury. “(The next day) I got up too quickly and then I fainted, so that was it – it wasn’t anything serious, it was just a matter of drinking fluids.”

Her condition got so bad that she was put on a saline drip and spent the night in the hospital.

However, this isn’t stopping her from heading to New York and showing the fashion world what she’s got. However, Demelza is realistic about her chances of scoring a fabulous career like the previous winner Alice Burdeu did. Alice is even one of the main models for Elite for the upcoming season’s show package.

“I only have eight photos in my portfolio when most models have a full book, so it’s really difficult to get the industry interested when you have really got nothing to show them,” Demelza said. “I am still a newbie as far as everyone else is concerned.”

I do wish Demelza the best of luck on her trip! I can only wonder if Alice’s success and ties to AusNTM will help or hurt Demelza. What do you think?

I wish demelza good success also in 2009. I have since read that her agent put the overseas work on hold until she was completely ready.

I was shocked to read of her dramatic weight loss during the competition. How ridiculous to be reading of something like that happening in 2008, it seems once again those involved in Australian Fashion & Modeling simply show how archaic they are in attitudes and worldwide awareness, by critisising a young aspiring talent in such a way to make her self conscious enough to do such a thing.

To have measurement pre-requisites like this for such a competition in this day and age is a joke.

It reminded me very much of another recent article, regarding a South American Top Model who last Summer was rejected for all the casting calls attended for Milan Fashion Week, the reason being that thew likes of Prada had pre-set ideas of size and currently looked at only slim, blonde, tall models. This again is crazy, does not represent Women’s modern attitudes (And I’m a Guy) and sets back the Fashion & Modeling Industries by decades.
