CNTM 3.07 “Rippin’ It Up” Recap

July 8, 2009 by Erin Balser

Last week on Canada’s Next Top Model, the girls headed to New York City for their go sees challenge! Despite having passport issues again, Maryam’s dedication keeps her in the game and Heather is sent home instead! We’re down to the final four – who is going to make it into the final three? Find out below!

Full recap below the jump!

Original Air Date: July 7, 2009
Challenge: Cashmere bathroom tissue runway
Challenge Winner: Linsay
Photo Shoot: CoverGirl EyeLights Ad
Guest Judge: Miss J Alexander
Called First: Linsay
Eliminated: Maryam

After we got the usual “aww Heather’s gone” and “yay Heather’s gone” confessionals, Jay stops by with some coffee and a special guest – Miss J! Miss J is certainly making the rounds, as he also appeared on this season of Britain’s Next Top Model. It’s runway time!
It turns out to be a real runway lesson too and nothing ridiculously gimmicky. Linsay really impresses J, but everyone else needs serious work.

For the challenge, the girls are wrapped in toilet paper and must walk down the runway. Whoever rips their dress the least wins. I can’t help but wonder if the quality of the walk is going to be accounted for at all. It turns out this is only a warm up, as the real challenge involves wearing couture toilet paper gowns by some of the most “influential” Canadian designers. Lucian Matis is there and while I love him, he’s been on every Canadian fashion reality show ever, including every season of CNTM so far.

When they’re getting dressed – after repeatedly being told to be careful – Maryam decides she needs to help Linsay, despite their being two stylists there. What are you, five years old Maryam? I know you mean well, but you weren’t asked to help. When you don’t know what you’re doing, you are not being helpful.

Despite having her dressed ripped and despite tripping up the stairs, Linsay wins and gets to go shoe shopping with Miss J. The other three head back to the hotel, where Meaghan and Nikita do a confessional ripping into Maryam. They need an outlet and i can appreciate that, but wow. That was an offesnive rant, even if that wasn’t their intentions.

It’s photo shoot time! And Mike Ruiz is shooting! I love Mike – he’s an awesome addition to the panel. The photo shoot is an actual CoverGirl ad. Everyone’s worried, but Linsay, Nikita and Maryam surprise everyone and bring it. Meaghan’s photo shoot just didn’t come together.

At panel, the judges make the girls do their runway walk for everyone. The judges are in love with Linsay. Miss J hates Maryam photo and convinces the other judges that it isn’t great. Despite Meaghan’s photo shoot troubles, her photo is great. I love the feedback both Meaghan and Nikita get at panel – Meaghan for getting caught up in the hair issues and Nikita for being self-deprecating and trashing her photo.

Jay asked about the ripped dress and it turns into finger pointing and Maryam gets defensive. In deliberation, the judges are torn about Maryam but in the end, they send her home. The reason is pretty stupid, but there’s been enough issues with Maryam over the course of the show that her elimination at this time makes sense. Linsay gets her second first call-out in a row.

Next week, it’s the finale! I’m so excited! I have no idea who I want to win. Every time I get behind Meaghan or Nikita, they annoy me. Linsay isn’t my favorite model, but she’s bringing it and working hard.

Who do you think will win?

I am super pissed at the judges decision. If they only saw the borderline racist comments Meagan and Nikkita made towards Maryam in their confessional. Making fun of her because she has an accent? Because english isn’t her first language? And then to state they didn’t do it in a mean way? I am actually surprised that Miss Jay didn’t bring up the fact that yes Linsay did trip and probably ruined the dress even more.

Isn’t Linsay supposed to be a grievance counselor? How can a narrow minded person who bitches and complains about everyone behind their back and berates a girl to tears for making a mistake actual counsel people with problems. I am very hopeful that she doesn’t actually work in the way she presents herself on the show, as a small minded backstabbing hussy.

Even at the end Maryam was just happy to be there and learn, which is what she
wanted from the begining. None of remaining three girls are going to make it big. They lack tact, taste, poise and style. Without the stylist, make up artists, coaches and publicists blocking their racist, self-deprecating, trashy and filthy mouths they will just wind up in the ‘Top-model’ gutter.

This show has lost one fan and CTV will be hearing from me about portraying ignorant bitchy tarts as winners. In my reality, they are all losers.

Yes, Nikita and Meaghan we’re being very disrespectful of Maryam, but I think if Nikita weren’t still in the competition, Meaghan wouldn’t have acted out that way. Meaghan seems like a follower, whereas Nikita is the ringleader. If Meaghan and, say, Heather we’re in the final four without Nikita, things would have been different, and the editing would have probably been more favourable. I still really like Meaghan, I don’t think she is a bad person, unlike Nikita who’s a horrible influence on her. Meaghan said she felt bad in the hot tub afterwards, so I know at least she has a conscience and felt guilty, Nikita didn’t, so at least Meaghan realises what she did was wrong, I just wish she would have discussed it with Maryam and distanced herself from Nikita altogether, she might be fun and exciting and bring out Meaghan’s crazy side, but she can be a bitch as well. I want Meaghan to win desperately, this episode scared the crap out of me, but I’m glad she stayed. Although Linsay is doing well, I find she looks like a drag queen (harsh I know, but not in person, only in photographs), I also find she can photograph much older, which isn’t a good thing. Nikita has a horrible attitude, and so I think, Meaghan, despite her setback this week, will at least be in the final two. Frankly, if anyone else won, I’d be dissapointed. In terms of modeling, she is the complete package, all the other girls have major weaknesses, she just needs to improve her walk and self-esteem, and despite her bad path this week, at least her flaws aren’t unfixable, unlike Linsay’s tendencies to photograph older and more manly. Here’s to hoping!

This episode was hard to watch. The final 3 don’t deserve to be CNTM with the disgusting attitude they displayed last night. Maryam’s heart is so pure and beautiful, her sweet disposition was taken advantage of by the other girls. WHY IS LINSAY STILL THERE? Her drag queen shoot from NYC should have eliminated her last week. Her age alone should have eliminated her weeks ago. She photographs old, and her body of work is much worse then the remaining girls.

Linsay yelling as Maryam was disgustingly condescending. Yelling at someone who is crying is insensitive, and as a counselor, you’d think she would have done otherwise.

I find it funny how Nikita claims to be a type of person who has the “balls” to say things that others don’t. It seems that the only time she has “balls” is when she gangs up on someone who is down. Other then that, she talks behind people’s backs, mocking their accent and intelligence. Which is rather ironic because Nikita has displayed a lot of ignorance and stupidity on the show.

Meaghan has really disappointed me. I was rooting for her from the first episode because she was obviously one of the most modelesque girls in the competition. Unfortunately, she’s proven to be a sheep, Nikita’s right hand man. And she’s just as two faced.

I hope the judges re-watched this episode, because they’ll realise they made a really big mistake.

I second wildchild. I can believe has insensitive and ignorant those girls were being towards Maryam. They came across as snobby and intolerant.

  7. Carmen says:

And another thing. Jay Manuel needs to stop picking out their “best” photos. I find it kinda fishy that both Nole and Mike said Maryam was the best of the day with every frame being useable, yet she went home. I think it should be the photographer’s responsibility to pick the best pictures.

  8. milkyaqua says:

Mr. Jay is picking pictures like Tyra. But seriously, Jeanne Bekker claims the judges don’t know what goes on in the house or when the girls aren’t in front of them which is what she supposedly based her decision on. Whatever though. I wish Maryam luck and even my hard heart was softened by Yasmin and Mike’s reaction to her elimination. I’m not excited about these final three especially Linsay. She does tend to look old in pics if the angle isn’t right and she has bullying tendencies to boot. Meaghan is a follower and Nikita is just a miserable person. If I had to pick, I’d go with Meaghan because she seems the less heinous of the three and more versatile look-wise.
