They have introduced several new ruled and guidelines to prevent that chaos at the original NYC audition in March.

1. No lining up overnight and no lining up prior to 6:00am. Registration will begin at 7:00am. These times may be amended at Producer’s discretion.

2. Proof of age is required to enter the line. Acceptable identification must include picture and birth date.

3. Colors of wristbands indicate when your scheduled audition time will be. If your scheduled audition time is several hours or more from the time that you receive your wristband, then we encourage you to leave and come back.

4. Only women applying should stand in line. If someone is just short of being 18, she can have one guardian with her. Please note that you must turn 18 by April 15, 2009 to audition.

5. Please make sure that you have everything you need to audition before you get into any line (for wristbands, etc.). You will only be allowed one bag that can fit comfortably on your lap inside the venue. This will be enforced by security.

6. No jumping in line or holding places in advance for others but it’s okay if you’re going to the restroom or getting food and water. You’re not guaranteed to be allowed back in line. Be courteous to others around you.

7. Casting staff will give special instructions for the disabled.

8. Once in the venue, no ins and outs.

9. Only one audition per open call – do not try again if you’ve been cut.

10. Casting staff wearing official ANTM gear outside the venue may ask you for information in advance but be careful who you talk to and avoid anyone trying to charge you anything to participate.

11. We reserve the right to change or add to these rules as needed.

No one knows for certain what caused the stampede. Tyra Banks and ANTM’s executive producer Ken Mok released an official statement commenting on the events that occurred.

“We are concerned by the events that occurred Saturday afternoon in the vicinity of the New York City casting call for the next cycle of America’s Next Top Model,” they said in an official email statement. “At this time, we still don’t know all the details of what happened or what triggered the incident. We appreciate the efforts of the NYPD and will assist them in any way possible in this matter.”

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is insistent that the incident have bene avoided, if only the orgnizaers requested more security from the city.

“You’ve just got to, in advance, arrange for security,” he said.

I’m saddened by the events too. Based on the many commenters and news reports, it sound as though Tyra and co are, in part, to blame for the incident. Their lack of organization, lack of communication and lax security seemed to have triggered a mob mentality. However, it is far too soon to tell exactly what happened. The NYPD are investigating and hopefully some light will be shed on the matter soon.

Tyra has released a second statement, promising that those who missed auditioning because of the NYC circumstances will be offered a second chance.

“To all the Top Model hopefuls who were affected by the New York casting, we are doing everything we can to make sure that ALL the girls who weren’t seen, get an opportunity to audition – we’ll update you on our plans very soon,” she writes in an email statement. “It is so important to me to redefine beauty, and make sure that everyone gets a fair chance to pursue their dream. I am beyond excited for Cycle 13; for the first time ever, young women 5′7″ and under have a shot at becoming America’s Next Top Model! I encourage each girl to come out ready to rock the runway and show off their fiercest pose. I’m rooting for all of you!”

I’m glad Tyra is giving these girls another opportunity. I can only hope it’s a better organized one!

Thousands of ANTM hopefuls had come out that day, with many girls camping overnight in hopes of trying out early. Shirley was one of the many people who were there early and she was kind enough to send me a photo of the long, dense line.

Here’s a video of the casting call. It shows the crowd panicking and breaking up.

Two of those injured were taken to the hospital and the four others declined further treatment after being taken care of by the fire department. Several people who were auditioning were trampled on, according to 1010wins.

“People were pushing, screaming, yelling at each other,” Lauren Musacchio said to the New York Times. “It was chaos.”

According to 1010wins, there was just an “enthusiastic” crowd that was aggressive, but manageable until someone yelled “fire!” That resulted in the stampede that lead to the trampling.

“Everyone got thrown everywhere,” Annina Manttari told the New York Times. “People were getting run over.”

There have been no details released by the New York Fire Department or the New York Police Department. I’ll keep you updated as more news is released.

According to a Top Model Live Journal poster, the girls were first divided into random groups of 100 or so. They then had to say their name, age, height and weight. From that, the casting directors selected 7 girls to move on to meet with the casting directors, and that part is shown in the video.

These auditions are very different from the auditions I attended for Canada’s Next Top Model. At the CNTM auditions, every girl met with Elmer Olsen or his associate and walked for him. It probably meant the auditions were much longer, but I think it’s a more fair assessment of the girls’ modeling potential and personality.

I wonder if any of the girls we saw in this video are going to make it to the semi-finals in New York City!

You can apply one of two ways – either attend an open casting call (see below) or send in a video application. There’s not a lot of information about the casting calls yet, just cities and dates for most of them, but I’ll keep you updated as more information is revealed!

The application is here. Applicants must be between the ages of 18-27 and must be a US citizen or a permanent resident.

Interestingly, the application is asking for those 5′7″ and under to apply. It clearly states this in both the application and in the eligibility requirements. This is either the biggest typo ever and some intern somewhere is getting fired as I type this, or Cycle 13 is going to be all about finding the next top petite model!

The auditions went as follows: each girl met with modeling agent Elmer Olsen or his associate Richard Campbell, and were asked their name, age and height and strutted their stuff for the hundreds of onlookers. I was there for four hours, saw hundreds of girls audition and only two made it through the second round. Competition is steeeeep! I’m just hoping this means the girls who make it into the house will be very high fashion and will do Canada proud!

If their height was in question, the girls were measured against the 5′8′ measuring stick (there were no exceptions), asked to walk again and give a profile for Elmer and Richard. If the girl got a pass, the crowd let up a huge cheer as she met with casting agents about round two and filled out a giant questionnaire. Most girls saw Elmer or Richard for less than 30 seconds, but it was all they needed to gauge whether the girl had what it took to be a top model.

Girls in line gave me a variety of different reasons for why they waited in line for hours to meet with the judges for only a few seconds. “Everyone tells me I should be a model,” Jana, a 6′2″ 21-year-old told me. Her 5′8″ friend Margarita said she wanted to set a positive example for Canadian girls and they shouldn’t base their self-worth on what they see in magazines.

When asked why she wanted to be Canada’s next top model, 20-year-old Kristen shrugged. “Why not?”

The girls in line were as diverse as the answers, the outfits and the struts down the runway. Girls were turned away for being too short, too tall, too sophisticated, too womanly, too old, too young and more. Elmer and Richard were very polite, simply telling lots of girls “you’re beautiful, but you’re not what we’re looking for right now.”

The auditions were not without drama! Several girls left in tears and many more tried to convince Elmer that he was making a mistake. One girl even fell and cracker knee when removing her heels and needed an ambulance called! Even with her crying in pain in the middle of the runway, the auditions went on.

I was lucky enough to meet with two of the girls who got the lucky pass to the second round–18 year-old Jenny from Brampton, Ontario (left) and 21-year-old Anna-Maria from Scarborough (right). Both girls were asked to come back on Sunday for an extensive round of interviews and polaroids with the casting directors.

Jenny, who is 5′8″, has been trying to break into the modeling industry since last September, her mother told me. She was scouted in a mall about eighteen months ago, but that never went anywhere. She was told her look was too exotic for the Toronto market and that she would have better luck in New York. However, Jenny and her family felt that she was too young for a move so far away. After seeing the ads on television, Jenny and her mom decided to give CNTM a shot before considering all her other options.

Anna-Maria, who is also 5′8″, has been modeling off-and-on for about 4 years. She was briefly signed with Ford, but that never went anywhere. She’s a trained hairdresser who was about to give up on modeling when her friends urged her to give CNTM a go. Anna-Maria told me she thinks she’d be perfect for the CNTM house because she “never stops talking.” Her vivacious personality lit up the auditions!

Also, I learned from the CNTM team that Elmer Olsen will NOT be a judge on the show, he’s simply a key player in casting and will represent the winner of CNTM this cycle. The judging panel has yet to be finalized, but we should expect an announcement soon!

Other things I learned:

They are ideally looking for girls between 5′8″ and 5′10″. Anything shorter won’t be considered at all. Anything taller is a bit more flexible, but 6′0″ is the absolute maximum they would look at. Don’t bother trying to lie or fudge your height. They’ll call you out on that in a second and just as many girls were turned away for being too tall as they were for being too short.

You need model proportions for them to consider you–that is, be a size 0-4 or be perfectly plus-sized. Average bodies need not apply. Elmer and company and truly looking for models first, television personalities second. Being 5-10 pounds outside the range is fine, but 25 is simply too much. (I think this actually goes against what Tyra and ANTM does, which is why CNTM’s criteria are more stringent.)

Simple is always better when auditioning. Simple make-up, simple shoes, simple hair, simple style. The judges took these girls more seriously and I think it paid off.

18-23 is the age range, but they were ideally looking for girls 21 and under. Age was almost as big a point of contention as height, with girls who “just turned 24″ trying out. Didn’t matter, they were sent on their way as soon as they pulled out their ids.

CNTM officials have said they’ve received over 2,000 applications already, but are still looking for the perfect top 10 to compete for the $100,000 contract!

Cycle 3 will air in Spring 2009. I can’t wait!
