Top Models in Action: Whitney Thompson

April 2, 2009 by Erin Balser

Last night’s Top Model in Action was America’s Next Top Model Cycle 10 winner Whitney Thompson. Whitney has capitalized on being the first plus-sized model to win ANTM and has been working fairly steadily since her win. She’s a Fashion Bug spokesperson and has appeared in campaigns for MetroStyle, JC Penney and more.

I’m not the biggest fan of Whitney but I do believe she can have a long and healthy career as long as she understands her market. Based on the choices she’s made so far, I think she does!

Whitney Thompson & McKey Sullivan on Yahoo Shine

March 19, 2009 by Erin Balser

America’s Next Top Model winners Whitney Thompson (Cycle 10) and McKey Sullivan (Cycle 11) stopped by Yahoo Shine the other day to talk about how to get eye makeup that’s Hollywood ready.

Makeup artist Rebecca Restrepo takes the two ANTM alum under her wing and shows them how to get runway ready makeup. It’s essentially a 10-minute infomerical, but it’s always fun to see the kind of work former ANTM winners get.

I can’t embed the video, but you can watch it for yourself here.

Whitney Thompson on MTV’s MADE

March 14, 2009 by Erin Balser

Whitney Thompson, winner of Cycle 10 of America’s Next Top Model made a brief appearance on the MTV show MADE a few weeks ago. The episode, titled “Power Girl” aired on February 21st, showed a young girl named Carrie getting made over into a girly girl. Carrie gets to briefly meet Whitney, and even though she claims she’s a big ANTM fan, she didn’t know who Whitney is!

It was nice of Whitney to take time to visit this girl for MADE. It’s too bad the available clip is really brief. I wonder what else they talked about.

If you like, you can watch the full episode here.

Whitney Thompson at Faces of Fashion Party

February 19, 2009 by Erin Balser

Whitney Thompson, winner of Cycle 10 of America’s Next Top Model, attended the LuxuryFashion.com’s “Faces of Fashion Week” party that also doubled as Aubrey O’Day’s 25th birthday party on February 17.

I have no words for this photo. Okay I do. Get a bra. Get a better dye job. Seriously, Whitney. It’s like she’s trying to summon CariDee’s worst red carpet moment ever and topping it. The dress is cute, but it does not fit her at all, and thus, makes her look trashy.

Earlier the same day, Whitney attended the Baby Phat & KLS Collection Fall 2009 fashion show at Gotham Hall, in the same look. Some are saying she sat front row (??), but I have to see a picture of that. How would Whitney manage to swing that?

Oxygen Celebrates the Launch of America’s Next Top Model

Last year, Oxygen acquired the exclusive cable rights to our favorite reality show, America’s Next Top Model. On January 18th, they are premiering America’s Next Top Model Obsessed, which will be a regular marathon of past ANTM seasons, complete with never-before-seen footage, interviews and more.

Whitney Thompson Named Influential Person by MSNBC

December 18, 2008 by Erin Balser

MSNBC named their most influential women of 2008 and America’s Next Top Model Cycle 10 winner Whitney Thompson made the list, being the first person appearing on their retrospective slideshow.

MSNBC applauds Whitney for breaking down fashion doors and showing America that thinner isn’t always the winner and hope that her 36-32-43 measurements will usher in a new era of curve-worship.

While I think the sentiment behind this accolade is nice, I just don’t think Whitney has the portfolio to back this up yet. Had MSNBC spun this as an “inspiration for young girls” nod or as a “notable women of 2008″ I could take it, but she hasn’t shaken up the fashion industry-only ANTM.

The other ladies honored on this year’s list are Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, Tina Fey, genetic researchers Anne Wojcicki and Linda Avey, Michelle Obama, Female Olympians Dara Torres, Lisa Leslie, Candace Parker, Kerri Walsh, Misty May-Trainor, Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin, Miley Cyrus, military general Ann E. Dunwoody, CNN commentator Rachel Maddow, author Stephenie Meyer, and the women of The View.

I think this list is fairly diverse in its representations of different industries and types of women. It’s a bit celebrity-heavy, but few industries are as wide-reaching as entertainment. That being said, so you think Whitney deserves a place of honor among these other recognized women?

Whitney Thompson Shops with the Deal Divas

December 6, 2008 by Erin Balser

Lucky Magazine Hosts 5th Annual Lucky Shops

The Deal Divas went shopping with and interviewed Cycle 10 winner Whitney Thompson earlier this week. They talked about the usual Whitney topics-how’s she’s a regular-sized girl and a plus-sized model and loves it, her desire to be a role model for young girls and change the fashion industry and more.

She also plugged Fashion Bug and Right Fit a lot. I guess that’s what being a good spokesperson is all about. She also mentions that some of the girls from ANTM have lashed out at her lately:

“The interesting thing though is that the girls who I was really close with during the show I’ve gotten the most backlash from,” she said. “I really don’t know why, something snapped I guess. A lot of them have gone off the deep-end.”

Who do you think she means? Whitney mentions this same girl asks Whitney about her recent weight gain-it doesn’t sound malicious, just curious. My guess is Anya. This is my hypothesis: now that the show is over, they just aren’t as close anymore. Anya’s made a few comments about Whitney’s weight and lack of work, that were out of concern/interest and in no way malicious or mean and Whitney took them completely the wrong way because she’s catty and judgmental.
