ANTM 13.08 “Let’s Go Surfing” Photos

October 29, 2009 by Erin Balser

In last night’s episode of America’s Next Top Model, each girl portrayed the coming together of two different races, in honor of Hawaii’s diverse history.

This photo shoot was controversial at best, offensive at worst. What did you think?

Here are the photos, in call out order.

    I don’t like Jen’s and Sundai’s photo. I liked Nicole’s, Erin’s and Brittany’s. I do not recognize Laura at all :D

  2. south of the equ8ter says:

i know! laura looks very nice in her photo but I can’t recognize her at all.

  3. prado says:

sundai looks like shes in her knees !
    hahahha

  4. Natasha says:

I don’t think this was offensive, I actually liked the idea. Laura’s photo is amazing, and Erin should have gone home, I like this photo of Brittany

  5. Meli says:

I think erin’s is the biggest transformation- I absolutely love this picture, I want to hang it up somewheres! It’s really beautiful!

I felt the call out order was appropriate with the exception of Sundai and Britney. I thought they both had semi-decent photos but Britneys conveyed more emotion…but the sepia tone might’ve had something to do with that. I love Nicole and Jenns photos. And I can see Jens photo in an upscale jewelry store. Meli, Erins was the biggest transformation because of the severity of the contrast…platinum blonde/no eyebrow look to dark hair with eyebrows. She didn’t deliver, though, which I thought she would. :/
I was surprised with Nicole…great photo.
    Stupid concept, though. They weren’t portraying 2 races…it was 3: their OWN + 2 others…too busy.

how is it any more or less offensive than the cycle 4 got milk shoot when they changed their races?? i dont get why people think its that controversial…and also how is erin’s photo bad? i find all her photos to be hauntingly beautiful because she is so stunning.

  8. Mike in NC (subscribed) says:

Personally, I don’t find any of it offensive. Controversial, perhaps in the eye of the beholder, but not offensive. Liz referred to the “Got Milk” add in cycle 4 and I really liked that photo shoot: the models were made up to be (ONE) different race. In THIS photo shoot, where the models were asked to be mixed races, it just seemed like there was no cohesion…it seemed scattered. A caucasian model, with darkened skin wearing a Native Indian formal head-dress and an eastern sarong. Ugh, too much for one message to be conveyed through a photo. To me, it was just tacky. (Like wearing a sweater and mittens with shorts and flip-flops.)
Additionally, I think we’ve weeded out the least likely winners so if anyone goes home from here on out, it’s because they simply took a bad photo…not because they’re a “bad” model.

I didn’t think the shoot was offensive per se, but these race-changing themes are really awkward.

That having been said, even though I absolutely hated Brittany from day one, I think she had a better photo that Jennifer, Erin or Sundai. They sent home the right girl but for the wrong reason that week.
