ANTM 12.03 “Do You Light the Way I Look?” Recap

March 11, 2009 by Erin Balser

I know the live blogs can be a bit hard to follow once they’re done, so I thought a simple recap post is in order!

On episode 12.03 of America’s Next Top Model, the girls get makeovers and do their first photo shoot with Nigel Barker, where they have to “light up” their faces using light sticks.

Original Air Date: March 11, 2009
Challenge: Makeover Day – no challenge
Photo Shoot: Light Your Face
Called First: Teyona
Eliminated: Jessica

This week, the girls are getting their makeovers and we immediately ease into that. Sutan gets lots of screen time and this is wonderful – we all love Sutan and agree he needs his own show. The makeovers are as follows:

Allison: giant blonde weave
Tahlia: big blonde weave
Sandra: super short blonde hair
Aminat: Naomi Campbell weave
Kortnie: red hair
London: short blonde hair
Celia: shorter hair
Jessica: shorter hair with more layers
Fo: short hair
Teyona: wavy weave

Fo is unimpressed with her makeover, but lasts until after it’s done before breaking down. Natalie gets indignant and refuses to let them cut her hair even before her makeover begins. Miss J is all ready to toss her out of the competition, but Mr. Jay reveals that Natalie wasn’t getting a makeover – her look screams model already. So uncool.

The girls are super impressed with their pink plaid Hummer limo. It looks as if Tyra commissioned the designers at Mattel for it. From the photo shoot, we go to the Wal-Mart Cover Girl challenge, but since there are no Wal-Marts in New York (and we don’t want these Upper East Side princesses to leave Manhattan now, do we?) Sutan brings Wal-Mart to them! The girls are divided into four teams and must pitch their products to a random girl on the street, bring her into the studio and give her a makeover.

All this is happening while Sandra is being her usual bitchy self.

Team one is Celia, Aminat and Sandra. I can’t remember the rest of the teams, but it doesn’t really matter. The challenge goes by so fast and team one is the only team that had it together, despite Sandra’s lack of participation.

From here, we move to the photo shoot. The girls are dressed up like ’80s inspired rock stars and have to “light” their own faces using a glow stick. Nigel is the photographer. i think this shoot is so unfair so early in the show – these girls hardly know anything about the very basics of modeling, let alone understanding where to hold a light so it best showcases your face. This is more of a top six shoot.

Nothing overly remarkable happens in the photo shoot, except Fo breaks down over her makeover when it’s her turn.

The guest judge is Nole Martin, who clearly regrets leaving this show for projects like True Beauty. Boy, was that show a huge step down. Tyra trashes everyone’s panel look expect Celia, who looks fierce. I love this girl. She loves fashion and understands fashion and knows how to present herself. But the bitch is 25 years old. That’s way too old to start a modeling career.

In the end, Teyona, Allison, Natalie, Celia and London impress. Tahlia, Fo, Jessica, Kortnie, Nijah, Sandra and Aminat do not. Teyons gets called first because her photo is slamming. Fo and Jessica end up in the bottom two – Fo for her makeover freak out and Jessica for resting on pretty. They send Jessica home and the girl is all “whatever, I’m still prettier than all the other girls here.” She does not get it.

Thoughts

  • I hate these early on episodes, they always seem so rushed. In an effort to get the eliminated girl’s story, she gets a disproportionate amount of screen time.
  • Tahlia’s photo was awful. Awful, awful, awful.
  • They should have chopped Natalie’s hair off just to spite her.
  • I really didn’t understand London’s or Sandra’s makeovers.
  • Seriously? No Wal-Marts anywhere in New York City? It’s a huge city!
  • What was the point of the Wal-Mart challenge?
  • Can Sutan get his own reality show?
  • Can Nole come back?
  • Jessica before Kortnie and Tahlia? Sure, both girls are nicer, but their photos were just as bad and they don’t have a model’s body.
  • Questions
Whose makeover was your favorite? Your least favorite?
Was Natalie’s freak out fair? Should she have been eliminated over it?
What did you think of the photo shoot concept?
Whose photo was the best? The worst?
Should Jessica been eliminated? If not, who would you have eliminated?

“Seriously? No Wal-Marts anywhere in New York City? It’s a huge city! ”

Yeah, seriously. The only one I know of that’s even remotely close to me in Long Island, but I live in Queens. I think I also recall going to one while I was in NJ.

    2. Bri says:

I love Kortnie and dont want her to go home. Celia seriously looks like an alien, and not in a good way. I love Londons makeover. I want Sandra to go home.

    3. Chris says:

Karma is a bitch haha..I think the Dennis Rodman look really suits Sandra..Her ugly personality really translates into her photographs. atalie reminds me of a Gossip Girl with a So-Cal edge..I wanted to see her get a really short cut like Janet (Cycle 9)/ Sinead (CNTM cycle 2)..shes too much of a perfect bitch to not have gotten a makeover.

Wow I was caught off guard when Jessica got eliminated. Honestly, I though either Sandra or Tahlia were going home. Tahlia is a beautiful girl, but she cannot take a modelesque photograph. I always thought Tyra kept the girls with the dramatic back-story longer than needed. So far this cycle has really bored me..I hope it picks up soon.

    4. Matthew says:

No walmart in NYC?, wow. Anyway, Celia was amazing, her fashion sense, her photo, just wow. Sandra needs to go, one would think her ego would deflate after being in the bottom two last week. But she manage to Out-bitch herself. One more thing, Anyone find that little girl in Tyra’s photo adorable, She is the cutest little thing.

    5. gogo says:

Okay is it just me or are the “makeovers” always are the same. I don’t think that everyone needs a drastic color change or huge weave. No one ever knows how to keep them from looking like crap. Moving on I do like London’s and Allison’s the best. Allison looks more like a model now and not some creepy doll. Worst is gonna be Fo(whom I loved at the beginning). I’m not sure if her spirit will ever recover. This photo shoot was crap. Sadly Nigel takes the worst photos whenever he shoots the girls. I think half of these ho’s should have gone home but I think the best in the shoot were London, Allison and Teyona.

    6. Peliquisha Dafron says:

I love it when peoples says “pacific” when they means “specific’ like STunat did last nights.

    7. hawaiishoegirlie says:

london looks like she fell into a tub of bleach and then rubbed her hands on sandras head. i don’t like any of the girl’s makeovers, none of them wowed me. tyra is losing it.

    8. Faizal Buksh says:

Whose makeover was your favorite? Your least favorite?

*My favorite was Fo..yeah it’s short but it’s cute and she has the face for it. My least favorite was Celia’s; apparently Tyra thought she should punish someone with Sarah from Cycle 6’s faux-hawk.

Was Natalie’s freak out fair? Should she have been eliminated over it? Was her freak out fair?

*HELL NO. These girls have been watching this show for the past 11 cycles, they should know what to expect. And yes, she should have been eliminated over it. Hell, if I was Teyona with that f**ked up weave, I would’ve pitched a fit, eliminations be damned.

What did you think of the photo shoot concept?

*It was just okay for me. Has anyone else noticed that so far, the photos have been a bit “gritty”, like texture wise?

Whose photo was the best? The worst?

*I personally thought Allison had the best photo, but that’s based on the fact that hers is the only one I can remember here, a day later. For the worst photo, I would have to agree with the panel, Jessica looked like a little kid who got caught playing with mommy’s glitter eyeshadow. Plus her whole attitude about being the most beautiful girl was getting on my nerves. Bitch, you’re cute but Fo’s my girl this season!

Should Jessica been eliminated? If not, who would you have eliminated?

*Buh-bye Jessica! And watch out Sandra, I’m keeping a close on you!!

    9. Zoe Lee says:

We have been fortunate in that thus far, NYC has been successful in keeping Walmart out. However, they are looking at locations in Union Sq to take over…sad…
